Even those swept up in the current crush of Latin musical sensations would be forgiven for initially overlooking the almost terminally low-key Marc Anthony, who is less cheesecake-y than Jennifer Lopez (although admittedly not by much) and more artistically, um, serious, than the amiable Ken Doll that is Ricky Martin. The American-born Anthony's first English-language release is a deftly performed and slickly produced work that finds the singer laboring under the constraints of superstar producers and overly dramatic, radio-friendly balladry. Anthony has a marvel of a voice that he doesn't seem to know quite what to do with; Despite flirtations with salsa, strings, funk, and other crowd-pleasing crossover options, Anthony seems shoehorned into a tepid, the-Next-Mariah-Carey-But-He's-Male role that ill-suits his obviously prodigious gifts. Presuming he ever gets free of the shackles of (presumably imminent) stardom, it will be interesting to see what this gifted singer does next. |
