Brian Mcknight: Back at One |

On his last record, 1998's double platinum Anytime, Brian McKnight enlisted the aid of notoriously sterile hitmakers like Diane Warren and Puffy Combs. The result was a nicely manicured R&B record with little discernible personality. McKnight's follow-up, Back at One, while not exactly a barn burner, is a slinky pop-soul record that offers a vast improvement. McKnight's trademark reliance on guitars instead of keyboards serves him well here, lending One a natural feel that distances him from many of his manufactured-soul compatriots. McKnight works his marvelous voice much like Mariah Carey does, which is to say, indiscriminately, and in the service of material that doesn't always deserve it. McKnight can't escape -- in fact he doesn't even try -- the grinding sameness of much of his material. As with most of post-Boyz II Men contemporary R&B, this means lots of slow-to-mid-tempo fireplace makeout songs about lovers who won't commit complete with harmony heavy choruses, etc. A record-closing, carefully arranged "Home," which may be McKnight's finest song yet, is the sole, happy exception. |
