Instead of larding her greatest-hits package with marginal hits from, say, 1994, Celine Dion has included seven new tracks, which are presumably meant to stay the course during her upcoming partial retirement. Though the addition of the new tracks necessitates the sacrificing of worthy hits like "Where Does My Heart Beat Now," the songs that did make the cut show Dion's evolution from late-'80s slugger of mid-tempo ballads to late-'90s slugger of mid-tempo ballads. Some of the new material is slightly more adventurous than Dion's typically glossy, VH-1-ready balladry, sometimes too much so: The posthumous duet with Frank Sinatra is icky, in the same way that the commercial with Fred Astaire dancing with the vacuum cleaner is icky, but as a fairly comprehensive compendium of hits, All the Way will do nicely. |
