The newest teen on the music scene is 18-year-old Christina Aguilera, a mighty singer with an album to match. Like Spears and 'N Sync's Justin, Aguilera paid her dues on The New Mickey Mouse Club. She then went on to record "Reflection," a hit song from the Disney animated feature Mulan. It's now this high school senior's turn to release her own album. Mostly staying away from the cloying sweetness of 'N Sync and the bubblegumish dance pop of Spears, the likes of Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers and Guy Roche instead opt to exploit Aguilera's superior chops, letting her gospel/R&B trills loose on the midtempo R&B "So Emotional" and the groovy and catchy first single "Genie in a Bottle." And when Aguilera & Co. do indulge, the songs are saved by the teenager's Denise Williams-worthy performances. There's plenty here for kids to love: catchy melodies, danceable twirl-in-front-of-the-mirror tunes, a new idol who photographs like a dream. The added bonus is that Christina Aguilera won't make parents cringe. While young hipsters bop to "Come On Over," the over-18 crowd can dirty dance to the cute "Somebody's Somebody." |
