Alanis Morissette was made for this album. Un-amplified and informal, she kicks off her shoes and spontaneously bares her soul for what sounds like an intimate group of friends. Indeed, it's much easier to close your eyes and picture her plucking out these tunes, her greatest hits, in a small East Village coffee shop, rather than the more formal Brooklyn Academy of Music, where "MTV Unplugged" was actually taped. The voice sometimes sounds a little too thin, like when she squeezes out the "It's all your fault" line, midway through "Head Over Feet." The music occasionally gets too audacious; "Princess Familiar" sounds anything but unplugged. Mostly, though, it's a solid set of songs, including at least two of special note: the previously unreleased "No Pressure Over Cappuccino" and a folksy cover of the Police's "King of Pain." Even overplayed singles like "You Oughta Know" and "Ironic" fare well here. Backed by a stately piano and strings, the singer adds a degree of sophistication to the former and mournful eloquence to the latter. |
