The debut release from pint-sized Christian singer turned 19-year-old budding pop confection Jessica Simpson is largely secular, very, very earnest, and far too amiable to actively dislike. Simpson has a sweetness that endures in spite of overwriting, overproduction, and songs that veer from fluffy pop to fluffy dance-pop to fluffy gospelly pop and back again. Her vocals are the typical Top 40 combination of breathy wonder mixed with moments of chest-thumping sincerity (see: Carey, Mariah), but Simpson at least seems to mean it more than, say, Britney Spears, who never seems to mean anything. An eye-batting duet with 98 Degrees' Nick Lachey is both boppy and grand, and suggestive of a Mulan-type Disney soundtrack. Her collaboration with Destiny's Child on "The Woman in Me" (she's only 19; how much woman could she have?) is funky and promising, even if it's nothing you haven't heard before. |
