After a couple of spotty recent releases, good-natured eighties avant-disco kings the Pet Shop Boys return with what is easily their finest record in some time, if not ever. Nightlife is a graceful, smoothly done semi-concept album that concerns itself with love and nightclubbing and sex (as opposed to all their past records about, you know, farming). It's as warbly and pretty and theatrical as one might expect, and songs like "You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk" and "I Don't Know What You Want But I Can't Give It Any More" lend it the wry and woeful feel of a dysfunctional relationship primer. Given the Boys' fondness for remixes and gadgets, it's hard not to suspect that somewhere within them lurks a full-bore techno band waiting to get out, but they never fully avail themselves of all the technological bells and whistles afforded them in the age of the Chemical Brothers. Nightlife is instead a heady swirl of disco, gentle dance-pop, and mild techno that improves and expands upon past releases, even if it never truly reinvents the wheel. |
