In 1997, the teen quotient in pop music was relatively small. New Kids on the Block were already passe, and it would be years before the massive new wave of boy bands and Britney-boppers would take root. Hanson were the wet-behind-the-ears youth of the recording industry, and they paid the price for their success with ridicule, eye rolling, and mockery. Well, the brothers Hanson are back with This Time Around, a title that seems to indicate that things will be different now. It's been three years since they released their Grammy-winning Middle of Nowhere. That's, like, 21 in dog years. And the boys have grown up. From the sounds and appearances, things are different this time around. Gone is the baby talk of "MMMBop." Instead, This Time Around scores with more sophisticated harmonies and storytelling. Of course, it's still hard to imagine the youngsters tackling such grownup themes as infidelity ("In the City"), existentialism ("Dying to Be Alive"), and lovelorn obsession ("Can't Stop") -- but the guys pull it off with pop-heavy finesse. Zac, Isaac, and Taylor are aided by the artist who could be the missing fourth Hanson, guitar prodigy Jonny Lang, who takes the instrumentation to a more complex level on three songs, including the title track. Other notable guests include John Popper of Blues Traveler and Rose "Sly & the Family" Stone. Next to the slick, contrived, and super-produced music of such bands as 'NSync and 98 Degrees, Hanson seems downright mature. |
