"Are you ready?," snarled Jonathan Davis on Korn's debut 1994 single "Blind," effectively warning the unsuspecting world of the harrowing metal roar the California quintet was about to unleash. Despite that caveat, the screechy, bottom-heavy wallop of the band's self-titled debut blindsided the hard rock community. Five years and several million records later, Korn is ready to blast all non-believers to Kingdom Come with its fourth album, Issues. Steering away from the hip-hop dabbling that dotted 1998's Follow The Leader, Issues strikes a rebellious, gut-wrenching, and emotionally naked stance. While the group has spawned innumerable copycats, Head and Munky's dual, down-tuned riffage remains inimitable. Fieldy's whacked-out bass lines and David Silveria's beats pulsate so severely, they threaten to create their own fault lines. Davis's creepy, dynamic voice fluctuates between heartfelt whines and guttural screams as he relates tales of his tortured, abused and disaffected existence. On the album opener "Dead," he sings "All I want is to be happy" over the wail of bagpipes. Korn has managed to forge a career making public these kinds of personal, deep-seeded "issues." Their fans wouldn't want it any other way. |
