Barbra Streisand: A Love Like Ours |

For those Barbra Streisand fans whose plans didn't allow them to be there when she got hitched to James Brolin, they now have a personal copy of the wedding album -- in the form of A Love Like Ours. With the single-minded theme of love eternal, if long-delayed, the album features some songs Streisand sang at her wedding and other tunes associated with her nuptials. Accordingly, the CD booklet is filled with photos of Streisand and Brolin, some taken at their wedding. The album's starry-eyed repertoire is furthered by her quite personal liner notes, which are certain to be enjoyed by those fans with a pressing interest in her private life. Although lush orchestral charts sometimes threaten to swallow the songs, some lovely melodies emerge, including the strong "Just One Lifetime" and the lyrical, expressive "It Must Be You," which features soaring multitracked vocals. The soft-focus Brazilian groove of "The Island" is a pleasant stylistic detour, as is "We Must Be Loving Right," a sweetly shuffling, country-swing-tinged tune with Streisand's enticing delivery framed by violin and pedal steel. Less country-styled is her duet with Vince Gill, "If You Ever Leave Me." Produced by David Foster and Richard Marx, it's more a power duet with vaguely Nashvillian vocal harmonies that sounds more like a love theme gone astray from a movie soundtrack. Among the Streisand-produced numbers, highlights include the album's first single, "I've Dreamed of You," a pastoral ballad etched with swelling strings, recorder, and acoustic guitar. And she positively beams on Gershwin's glorious "Isn't it a Pity?" with lyrics on the apt theme of long-awaited romance. The album ends poignantly, with a song from the Streisand landmark Funny Girl, "The Music That Makes Me Dance." She remakes the song with passionate intensity -- decorated with Kenny G's saxophone fills -- and brings it to a thunderous grand finale. Even the hardest-hearted listener would have to say to Barbra, "mazel tov." |
