In the last 10 years, movie soundtracks have developed in two ways: They've taken on increased relevance in the films themselves to truly set a mood, and they've become shiny, ready-made mix-tapes for target audiences. The soundtrack from the tech-heavy film, The Matrix, manages to be both simultaneously. Falling somewhere between the doom and gloom of the almost Goth soundtrack to The Crow and the more danceable tunes from Hackers, the variety of The Matrix sits comfortably on a fence; too heavy to be called "modern rock" and too upbeat to really scare your parents. Listeners who've seen the movie may notice a theme similar to "the Force" from Star Wars; that likeness comes across in the soundtrack too. Think of the "Light Side" as the tracks you might catch on MTV, and the "Dark Side" as those that are more likely caught in a club or your living room. Lightsiders include Marilyn Manson, Prodigy, Rob Zombie (with a new remix of his hit "Dragula") and "Wake Up" from the first Rage Against the Machine album. Ministry offers up "Bad Blood," a cut from Dark Side of the Spoon, which was unreleased at the same time as the debut of The Matrix. The "Dark Side" is a blend of beats and growls, with the likes of old-schoolers Meat Beat Manifesto ("Prime Audio Soup") alongside of the Deftones and the remarkably Ministry/KMFDM-sounding Rammstein. The only real gasp for breath on the album is supplied by Rob D's brooding "Clubbed to Death," a down-tempo number that intersperses Jan Hammer-style piano with ominous background tones. The disc goes clubby with a big-beat contribution from the Propellerheads ("Spybreak!") and a touch of drum & bass from Hive ("Ultrasonic Sound"). The Matrix soundtrack hurtles along with the breakneck pace of the film, and presents great background music for dodging bullets, practicing Kung Fu or just washing the dishes. |
