Armed with an ultra-confident disposition, downtown hipness, and a head of gorgeous fuscia locks, Kelis (pronounced Kuh-leece) flexes the kind of magnetizing intangibles that could make her a veritable star. Kaleidoscope is a promising, somewhat inconsistent, debut propelled by the soulfully futuristic beats of the Neptunes production tandem, as well as the stylish hues of the 19-year-old's own voice. The album's first single is "Caught Out There," a swath of venomous, post-breakup retribution directed toward the male gender (its endearing chorus: "I hate you so much right now!"). Riding a bit of "Bills, Bills, Bills" momentum, the song underscores Kelis' mix of tangible sincerity, playfulness, and hip-hop engendering. Not that she's anti-men; Kelis sings mostly like someone who's frequently hurt by love despite her deep desire not to be. A large chunk of gratitude should be paid to the Neptunes who are responsible for making this album work in the places it does. Their punctuating beats, crafted in a post-Timbaland-and-Aaliyah mold, fit Kelis' conversational stuttering perfectly -- probably a good reason why they recruited her to sing on Ol' Dirty Bastard's "Got Your Money." On "Good Stuff," the Neptunes hint at minimalist techno; on "I Want Your Love," their robust, melodic bass hits (and Kelis' sincere colloquialism) help create the album's best song. What Kelis could truly benefit from is tighter songwriting, something that, considering the recent rash of colorful, vivacious young singers, must be in short supply. Kelis, however, is a keeper. | ||||
