Suede: Head Music |

Why would a smart sexy band like Suede try to re-invent itself as a big dumb dance rock band? I don’t know. What I do know is this: Brett Anderson blew the first incarnation of the band (with guitarist Bernard Butler) by not being nearly cooperative enough. A quick listen to Bernard’s solo record reveals that Brett really is the brains behind the band. Even so, I have a theory that this is sort of like a second marriage for the pencil-thin man. He’s trying not to make the same mistake that he made in the first marriage. To that end, Anderson has share song writing more completely with Neil Codling and Mat Osman, and as it turns out, fine musicians that they are, they can’t keep up with Anderson in the C-L-E-V-E-R department. Ah well, nice try. It’s still a pretty good album, but definitely the least of the four. Discuss: Have you ever noticed that bands who get slagged for always sounding the same always have very distinctive sounding vocalists. Brett sounds the same. The band doesn’t. It’s rockier, less languid that usually, beatier, and more electronic. If the last album was glossy and dark, this one is glossy and light. Even the album art says so. | ||||
