He was born in England and looks like a possible reject from 98 Degrees, yet Martin makes an indelible impression on his soulful debut, One Shade Of Love. Loaded with lush harmonies and elegant R&B scores, the disc puts the singer across as the unlikely link between Babyface and the Backstreet Boys. Barring his over-dependence on tepid tear-jerkers, Martin simply shines when his voice stumbles across the right melody, as on the classy "Who" and the down-on-his-knees paean "What Other Man." Rounding out his own material (Martin co-wrote most of the album), is a stately cover of the Isley Brothers' "Caravan of Love" and a spiritual take on Shawn Colvin's plaintive "I Don't Know Why." |
