For the next year, when doors are slammed and teenage boys turn up their stereos to drown out their family, their school, their boss, or their girlfriends, the music will come from Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water. Wherever there is emotional conflict needing a bit of fuel to bring it to a full-blown moment of Teen Angst Drama, this latest album from Limp Bizkit should fit the bill quite nicely. It was the same story with the group's previous two releases, so they're treading a bit of water here — hot-dog-flavored or not. On the other hand, Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water is at its tastiest when the angst is turned up loudest. The thundering rock-rap riffs of testosterone rave-ups such as "Full Nelson," "My Generation" and "Rollin' (Air Raid Vehicle)" are much more exciting and memorable than the album's slower, more thoughtful songs ("Boiler," "The One"). The two extremes are combined with great success in "My Way" , a you'll-miss-me-when-I'm-gone-but-at-least-I'll-be-happier tune that rocks in the chorus but seethes in the verses to great effect. In next summer's teen-misfit movie, "My Way" will probably be the song the protagonist hero plays when he realizes he just needs to be himself to get the girl and get the hell out of his oppressive, go-nowhere town. |
