Foo Fighters: There Is Nothing Left To Lose |
|||||
|
Foo Fighters were the most unexpectedly mercurial band in '90s rock, boasting a different lineup for each of their three '90s albums. The ever-shifting lineup didn't help erase the image that the group was merely a vehicle for Dave Grohl -- after all, he wasn't merely the main songwriter and lead vocalist, he recorded the first Foos album as a solo project and took over the drums during the recording of the second record, The Colour and the Shape, when William Goldsmith left due to artistic tensions. Goldsmith's departure, along with guitarist Pat Smear's, made it seem like Grohl was somewhat of a dictator, at least to some biased outside observers, and that's why their third There is Nothing Left to Lose comes as something as a surprise. It is the first Foo Fighters album that sounds like the work of a unified, muscular band. A lot of credit should go to Adam Kasper, who produced the record with the band. Together, Kasper and the Foos have created the first Foos album that rocks really hard -- the debut was hampered by its home-grown origins, while The Colour was polished too heavily by Gil Norton. There is Nothing Left to Lose has a stripped-down sound and an immediate attack that makes even the poppier numbers ("Generator, " "Aurora, " "Ain't it the Life") rock hard. The organic, natural sound is welcome, but the album also benefits from the strongest set of songs Grohl and the Foo Fighters have yet written. The first two albums had strong singles, but were buoyed by a lot of amiable filler. Here, there are the typical strong singles (highlighted by the lead single, ("Learning to Fly"), but there's no fat, either; each track has a memorable hook or melody, and they seem all the more catchy because they're delivered with conviction and confidence. And that's why the album sounds like the first true band album the Foo Fighters have made -- the group sounds assured and confident, where they previously seemed like they had something to prove. It's as they know that they have few peers in straightahead, melodic American post-grunge hard rock, so they're willing just to lay back, turn out a solid set of 11 songs and rock hard. They make it sound easy and fun, and that's what really sets them apart from their contemporaries. That, and the fact that they're getting better as they're losing members and growing older, which is certainly a rarity in rock & roll. |
