Jamiroquai: Synkronized

It's been two years since "Virtual Insanity" led Jamiroquai from Britain's bloodshot, nouveau-soul music scene to the podium at the Grammys and MTV Video Music Awards. A disco nap, some Ferraris (a lot of Ferraris?), and an economic upswing later, Jay Kay and the boys have returned for their fourth album, begging and quickly answering the question, "Is there such a thing as an economically-driven pop album?"

With Synkronized, Jamiroquai's mission has never been clearer: make jet-set music for the prosperous. The new album serves as a soundtrack for those enjoying windfalls during these late-century boom years. It seems that with the group's new-found global acclaim, the world is now Jamiroquai's own Ibiza. Synkronized is Jamiroquai as skillfully derivative as ever, full of the expected stock funk and soul elements its always accounted for (e.g., flatulent bass lines, didgeridoo, etc.), with the addition of the occasional, somewhat new inspirations (i.e., shades of Steely Dan).

The first single, "Canned Heat," epitomizes the album's unrelenting "Just Dance" missive and is already a remix hit in the house clubs that are defining the state of 1999's pre-millennial hedonism. "Supersonic" satisfyingly shows off the band's groovy instrumental chops, and "Falling," with its "too black for me" refrain, lobs even the dimmest of critics the easiest of jabs.

As dependable as ever, Synkronized is a canned party -- what you'll hear and not remember on the big New Year's Eve. It may hold no surprises, but the knackered masses should be pleased. Give in if you can.
